Hi - I'm Alex!

I am the owner and pastry chef of Kitchen Island, a small, ingredient-focused bakery in Hamilton, Ontario, offering fresh, high-quality pastries delivered right to your door!

Our pastries are made with the best ingredients that I can find. I cultivate relationships with farmers and local producers, so that I am certain of how my ingredients are grown and that they are fresh.

“My philosophy is centred on caring and carefulness: I care for each pastry I make and I’m careful in my methods and business practices, as a way of caring for you.”

The Whole Story...Home-cooked meals and fresh baked goods were the staples of my childhood in Israel. Amidst busy engineering careers, my parents never compromised on meals. My mom woke early every morning to cook us lunch before work and would phone to make certain I’d eaten something after school. From the enthusiastically prepared stews and dumplings of my parents’ Soviet homeland, to the bourekas and other pastries of my homeland, it was obvious to us, even as children, that food was the everyday currency of love in our home. This connection between food and love was so constant and genuine that I inherited it almost as wholly as I did my parents’ genes. There is little wonder, then, in how I came to a career in hospitality.

"This connection between food and love was so constant and genuine that I inherited it almost as wholly as I did my parents’ genes."

I had the great fortune of working in some of Tel Aviv's best restaurants, and the greater fortune of meeting the love of my life in one of them. My partner and I shared my parents’ love of food and their migratory aspirations, leaving Israel for Canada with plans to raise our own well-fed family.

I studied Baking and Pastry Arts at George Brown College and worked at some great establishments in Toronto: Sud Forno, OMG Baked Goodness, and Cafe Neon.

"This connection between food and love was so constant and genuine that I inherited it almost as wholly as I did my parents’ genes."

When we came to Hamilton, I felt it was time to explore my own inspirations, a synthesis of the many pastry traditions that have influenced me, fused with the world-class produce of South-Western Ontario, and evolving as I continue to be inspired by the farmers that I work with and the people for whom I am baking.

Our kitchen is the heart of our home; our island, the heart of our kitchen. The kitchen island furnishes many of our labours of love, it’s where we nourish, commune with, and care for our family and friends. With this in mind, I named my business after the heart of hearts of my home. My philosophy is centred on caring and carefulness: I care for each pastry I make and I’m careful in my methods and business practices, as a way of caring for you. Kitchen Island is a name that I hope will continually remind you of the commitment that I have made to prioritize love and caring in all that we produce, as if you were sitting in my home, at my kitchen island.
